A ballade is a French poetic form in addition to the corresponding musical chanson. It was one of the 3 forms from medieval and Renaissance France, most typically set to song during the 13th-15th centuries.
The ballade form has three 8-line stanzas, each with a regular meter and rhyme scheme. The final line in the stanza is a refrain that’s used again at the end of all 3 verses as well as one 4-line concluding verse addressed to “the prince.”

This font was designed by Paul Renner and released in two weights, regular (1937) and semi-bold (1938). There is a sloppy freebie digitization of the semi-bold by Dieter Steffmann from 2002. It adds contour and shadow styles to make it seem more complete. A proper digitization for both weights was made with Gerhard Helzel’s help in 2015.
