Aaargh font is a brush typeface created by Mårten Norell, André Gürtler, and Marlene Öhrström in 2018. It was originally a chicken scratch project originally created as a brush hand-drawn typeface, but turned into a full font after receiving positive feedback. The font’s letters are loosely based on the uppercase letters of the popular Old Standard 8 font series. The Aaargh font includes support for Western, Central, and South Eastern European character sets, as well as support for the Cyrillic script.
Fonts have come a long way since the first one, an alphabet (in the modern sense) of 22 capital Latin letters cut in stone to adorn the facade of the Basel Cathedral in Switzerland. While that font was made in 1439, the history of the modern font began in the 15th century, with the introduction of movable type printing.

As you probably already know, there’s a font for everything out there. From the most common ones (like Times New Roman) to the most obscure ones (like Zapf Dingbats). And while there are still a lot of fonts that have yet to be discovered, there’s no doubt that one of the most popular (and creative) categories are fonts that represent things that normally don’t come with a font (i.e., animals, foods, plants).

The Aaargh font is a fun, free typeface that looks like a medieval ransom note. It’s a surprisingly versatile design, and can be used for a wide variety of projects. From the developer: “The Aaargh font is based on a 13th century German manuscript and is inspired by the look of blackletter. The font’s characters are based on a quadratic form and are perfectly suitable for expressing the idiosyncrasy of the medieval handwriting. Aaargh was developed with the aid of professional calligraphers.”
